Bali Bali

Welp...3 month hiatus.  Whoops?

Let's start where I left off, Indonesia.  I didn't get any pictures up during my time there, but here's a taste of what my trip was like! It was absolutely lovely spending time with my friend Myah and basking in the tropical heat in the midst of winter.  Enjoy!

The trip started off in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on the island of Java.

We then flew to Bali and stayed in South Bali, in the town of Jimbaran.

Bingtang - the one and only beer of Bali.

 Traditional Balinese dance and story-telling

Fresh seafood in Jambaran Bay.  I'm usually not one to get excited about anything from the sea, but these little buggers were DELICIOUS.
 Traditional cloth painting.
Bali is full of very vibrant colors and designs.  All traditional cloth is hand painted. This type of cloth is called Endek and is the most common textile design in Bali.  It is also the most difficult to make.
Indonesia is a very unique country in that each island is very distinctly different from the rest.  For example, while Java has a dominant Muslim community, the people of Bali practice Hinduism.
Every home and public place gives an offering to the Gods three times a day.  These offerings are called 'canang sari' and are a way of giving back what has been given to them by the Gods.
Offering appeases the spirits and brings prosperity and good health to the family.

Famous rice fields in Bali.  These ones are especially noteworthy because they were used in the film, Eat, Pray, Love - a film that created an extreme boost in tourism in Bali.

 The Monkey Forest in Ubud.

From South Bali, we headed to the northeast side of the island, to a city called Amed.

Spa day!

Some women helping us load our bags onto the fast boat to the Gili Islands.  They are really strong.

The Gili Islands!
You can only reach the Gili Islands via boat.  There are no motorized vehicles on the islands, all of which you can walk around in about an hour or two.  There are three islands, but we spent our time on Gili Trawangan.

Coconut Milk.  Not as sweet as I thought it would be.

Due to bad weather, we only managed an afternoon of snorkeling during our trip, but the fishes we saw were exquisite.  Thumbs up!
Lychee Fruit - full of ants, but tasty in the end.

As there are no motorized vehicles, many people go from one end of the island to another in these carts pulled by horses.  The carts have bells on them to warn you when they're coming up behind you.
